What Is Health Informatics?

The field of health informatics (HI) combines computer science, information science, and health care. HI professionals work with the processes and tools used to record, store, and analyze health care information, and communicate with both health care providers and IT professionals.

Courses within the online Master of Health Informatics (MHI) focus on the strategic and operational relevance and robustness of clinical information, resources, workflow, and connectivity within the health care industry and public health sectors.

In addition to core courses, you can specialize your degree by adding an optional concentration in health information management. This online master's in health informatics program culminates in a practice-focused capstone project that allows you to apply what you've learned to a challenging, real-world problem or issue.

This certificate which consists of four major and one elective course in the Master of Health Informatics program will prepare you with the knowledge and skills necessary to interact with and effectively use digital tools and emerging technologies important in a rapidly evolving digital health care landscape.

The Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM) is the accreditor of Purdue Global's DHL certificate program. The DHL program’s accreditation has been affirmed through 2030–2031.

Upon graduating, you can apply some of your courses toward an Executive Juris Doctor (EJD) degree at Purdue Global Law School. Save up to $6,540 in tuition and graduate a year sooner. *Estimated Graduation Date and Average Completion: Estimated graduation date is based on the assumption that you will enroll in time to begin classes on the next upcoming start date, will remain enrolled for each consecutive term, and will maintain satisfactory academic standing in each term to progress toward completion of your program. Purdue Global Law School EJD Degree – MHI: Purdue Global alumni are eligible for a 20% tuition reduction on Purdue Global Law School programs. Tuition savings calculated as 15 credit hours x reduced per credit tuition rate of $436 = $6,540. Savings will vary based on the courses completed in the student’s master’s degree program. Credits apply toward open elective and/or law and technology electives in the EJD program.

Time savings based on a student who applies 15 credit hours toward the 3-year EJD program; remaining 57 credits can be completed in 2 years and 4 months of study. MHI can be completed in 2.3 years of study when adhering to the recommended course-load each term, taking courses in sequence, and without interruptions such as a leave of absence.
